Harder, Don't Stop! THE SOCCER CRAZE

Imagine a group of a dozen or so good-looking guys and a few sleek ladies all yelling, "Great head...", "Don't Stop...", "Harder...". "Go for it..." Now imagine the sweat running off their bronzed bodies and the damp brightly colored T-shirts. and shorts clinging closely to their muscular torsoes.

Such a scene is typical of the Saturday morning soccer games at the "beach" in Cheesman Park.

Without a doubt, soccer is the fastest growing sport among gays inDenver Beginning with a group of four, Peter Greene's Saturday Soccer Club has grown to 25. No other gay athletic group can boast that type of growth.

Simple and invigorating. Two words Greene uses often to explain the growing interest in the sport. There are few rules, the game is easy to learn and you don't have to play for three or four years to enjoy it.

Six of the players who meet at the appointed hour of 11:00 am on Saturday mornings have played on organized soccer teams in other cities and they share their knowledge with others during informal practice sessions and games.

Peter Greene and Jon Russo, the group's coordinators, plan to eventually form an organized, competitive gay soccer team to play other gay and straight teams. "Right now, we're just a bunch of gay people having fun playing soccer," Greene said.

But watch for 'em they're getting serious fast.
